Die Stadtkirche von Creuzburg ist eine der ersten evangelischen Kirchen in ganz Thüringen. Heute steht sie unter Denkmalschutz. Drei Jahre dauerte der Bau: von 1215-1218. Ursprünglich war sie wohl als romanische Basilika geplant. Davon zeugt der große, halbrunde Chorraum mit einem Durchmesser von 11 Metern. Im 13. Jahrhundert konnte die Kirche aufgrund der Ausmaße noch nicht vollständig fertiggestellt werden. Wie durch ein Wunder blieb sie auch bei einer Belagerung im Sommer 1295 durch König Adolf von Nassau als eines der wenigen Bauwerke erhalten. Im 14. Jahrhundert stellte man den Kirchenbau endlich fertig, jedoch hatte das Gotteshaus bis dato noch immer keinen Turm. Dieser wurde erst 1428 errichtet. Zwar wurde die reiche Ausstattung der Nikolaikirche auch während der Reformation von religiösen Eiferern und Bilderstürmern schwer verwüstet, das Bauwerk selbst überstand aber den Bauernkrieg und den bald folgenden Dreißigjährigen Krieg unbeschadet. Bei einem Großbrand im Jahr 1765 brannte St. Nikolai jedoch vollständig aus. Damals reiste sogar der Geheimrat Johann Wolfgang von Goethe an, skizzierte die Trümmer und engagierte sich beim Wiederaufbau. Es dauerte allerdings fast 20 Jahre, ehe mit der Wiederherstellung begonnen werden konnte. 1786 wurde die Kirche erneut geweiht. Die Innenausstattung lehnte man an den Geschmack der Zeit an und eine Orgel wurde angeschafft. 1921 brachte man eine Gedenktafel für den Creuzburger Komponisten und Organisten Michael Praetorius an, der ein bedeutender Vertreter der evangelischen Kirchenmusik war. Er wurde 1521 in Creuzburg geboren. Aus seiner Feder stammen Werke wie: "Es ist ein Ros' entsprungen" und "In dulci jubilo". Die Auswirkungen des zweiten Weltkrieges jedoch gingen an der Kirche nicht spurlos vorüber. Ein schwerer Angriff der amerikanischen Truppen zerstörte die Kirche gänzlich. Sie brannte bis auf die Grundmauern aus und blieb als Ruine und Mahnmal bis in die 1960er-Jahre in diesem desolaten Zustand. Der Wiederaufbau begann 1963. Die Unterhaltungs- und Sanierungsarbeiten halten bis heute an.

Le riche mobilier de l'église Saint-Nicolas a certes été gravement endommagé par les zélotes religieux et les iconoclastes pendant la Réforme, mais l'édifice lui-même a survécu sans dommage à la guerre des paysans et à la guerre de Trente Ans qui a suivi. Cependant, lors d'un grand incendie en 1765, St. Nikolai fut entièrement détruit par les flammes. À l'époque, le conseiller privé Johann Wolfgang von Goethe s'est même rendu sur place, a fait un croquis des décombres et s'est engagé dans la reconstruction. Il fallut cependant attendre près de 20 ans avant que la reconstruction ne puisse commencer. L'église fut à nouveau consacrée en 1786. L'aménagement intérieur fut adapté au goût de l'époque et un orgue fut acheté. En 1921, une plaque commémorative fut apposée en l'honneur du compositeur et organiste Michael Praetorius de Creuzburg, qui fut un représentant important de la musique religieuse protestante. Il est né à Creuzburg en 1521. Il a écrit des œuvres telles que : "Es ist ein Ros' entsprungen" et "In dulci jubilo". Les conséquences de la Seconde Guerre mondiale n'ont cependant pas épargné l'église. Une grave attaque des troupes américaines a complètement détruit l'église. Elle a brûlé jusqu'aux fondations et est restée dans cet état de ruine et de mémorial jusque dans les années 1960. La reconstruction a commencé en 1963 et les travaux d'entretien et de rénovation se poursuivent encore aujourd'hui.

He was born in Creuzburg in 1521. His works include "Es ist ein Ros' entsprungen" and "In dulci jubilo". The effects of the Second World War, however, did not leave the church unscathed. A heavy attack by American troops completely destroyed the church. It burned to the ground and remained in this desolate state as a ruin and memorial until the 1960s. Reconstruction began in 1963, and maintenance and renovation work continues to this day.
