The small town with its districts, Bachra, Roldisleben, Rothenberga and Schafau, lies picturesquely in the northeast of Thuringia, on the southern edge of the Finne and Hohe Schrecke landscape conservation area. The wooded Finnerücken, which surrounds the town to the north and east, protects it from harsh winds. A mild climate, lots of forest and clean air await you in Rastenberg. The town can look back on an eventful historical past. Prehistoric and early historic finds or the historic parts of the town wall with its fortified towers as well as many historic buildings bear witness to this. Rastenberg was first mentioned in a document in 1252. At least 300 years ago, the town was already famous for its healing steel spring. The historic town hall with its beautiful murals inside, the town wall from the 17th century and the Coudray church with a Schulze organ in the centre of town invite you to linger. A special feature is the Rastenberg forest swimming pool, a monument among the open-air swimming pools of Thuringia and unique, with its 5000 m2 water surface. Due to its idyllic location in the middle of the Hochwald, it is one of the most beautiful open-air swimming pools in Thuringia. Among the special features are the historical changing cabins, the Wandelhalle, as well as the Kabinen-Guck-Museum, the water playground and the slide. You can roam the forest around Rastenberg on marked and partly unmarked circular trails, a nature trail and the supra-regional Finne hiking trail.
