Schleiz is located in the southeast of Thuringia and is the district town of the Saale-Orla district. As a part of the Thuringian Vogtland, Schleiz was and is closely connected to the history of the princely family of Reuss through historical development. According to this development Schleiz has developed as a school and civil service town. In GDR times Schleiz was integrated within the district Gera as a district town, after the political turn, the accession to the Federal Republic and after the fusion of the districts Schleiz, Lobenstein, Pößneck Schleiz is now district town of the Saale-Orla district in the south-east Thuringian area, near the border to the Free States Saxony and Bavaria. The southern area around Schleiz is also considered the Thuringian Slate Mountains. The black looking solid rock, which is used in many places, also just in Schleiz for the roofing, is symbol of this landscape. One calls this area also in northern orientation of Schleiz because of its geographical height as Oberland, which is characterized by extensive plateaus and coniferous forests. This landscape is sparse, so that beside certain limited arable farming mainly cattle breeding is represented. This free and far-seeing landscape invites for hiking, for bicycle tours or for a contemplative stroll at the numerous lakes and dams.

Schleiz liegt im Südosten Thüringens und ist die Kreisstadt des Saale-Orla-Kreises. Als Teilgebiet des Thüringer Vogtlandes war und ist Schleiz durch historische Entwicklung eng mit der Geschichte der Fürstenfamilie zu Reuss verbunden. Entsprechend dieser Entwicklung hat sich Schleiz als Schul- und Beamtenstadt entwickelt. Zu DDR-Zeiten war Schleiz innerhalb des Bezirkes Gera als Kreisstadt integriert, nach der politischen Wende, dem Beitritt zur Bundesrepublik und nach dem Zusammenschluss der Kreise Schleiz, Lobenstein, Pößneck ist Schleiz nun Kreisstadt des Saale-Orla-Kreises im Südost-Thüringer Raum, nahe der Grenze zu den Freistaaten Sachsen und Bayern. Die südliche Gegend um Schleiz wird auch als das Thüringer Schiefergebirge betrachtet. Das schwarz aussehende feste Gestein, was vielerorts, auch gerade in Schleiz, für die Dachbedeckung verwendet wird, ist Symbol dieser Landschaft. Man bezeichnet diese Gegend auch in nördlicher Ausrichtung von Schleiz wegen seiner geographischen Höhe als Oberland, was durch ausgedehnte Hochebenen und Nadelwälder gekennzeichnet ist. Diese Landschaft ist karg, sodass neben bestimmten eingeschränktem Ackerbau hauptsächlich die Viehzucht vertreten ist. Diese freie und weitsichtige Landschaft lädt zum Wandern, für Radtouren oder zum beschaulichen Bummeln an den zahlreichen Seen und Talsperren ein.

Schleiz se trouve au sud-est de la Thuringe et est le chef-lieu de l'arrondissement de Saale-Orla. En tant que partie du Vogtland de Thuringe, Schleiz était et est toujours étroitement liée à l'histoire de la famille princière zu Reuss. Conformément à cette évolution, Schleiz s'est développée comme une ville d'écoles et de fonctionnaires. À l'époque de la RDA, Schleiz était intégrée au district de Gera en tant que chef-lieu d'arrondissement. La roche solide d'aspect noir, utilisée dans de nombreux endroits, notamment à Schleiz, pour la couverture des toits, est le symbole de ce paysage. En raison de son altitude, cette région est également appelée Oberland (région supérieure) lorsqu'elle est orientée vers le nord de Schleiz, et se caractérise par de vastes plateaux et des forêts de conifères. C'est un paysage aride, où l'élevage est la principale activité, à côté de certaines cultures limitées. Ce paysage libre et clairvoyant invite à la randonnée, au cyclisme ou à la flânerie le long des nombreux lacs et barrages.
