Un incendie de la ville en 1581 a détruit la Bonifatiuskirche originale. Sur ses murs de fondation, la "Nouvelle Église" a été construite en 1683 comme une salle baroque. À l'occasion du 250e anniversaire de Johann Sebastian Bach, elle a reçu le nom du compositeur. Johann Friedrich Wender de Mühlhausen a construit un orgue pour l'église de 1699 à 1703. Johann Sebastian Bach, âgé de 18 ans, prend possession de l'instrument et y travaille comme organiste jusqu'en 1707. Malgré de nombreuses réparations et modifications, l'orgue original était à peine jouable. En 1913, un orgue romantique a été construit dans l'église Bach par la société Steinmeyer. En 1990, le directeur musical de l'église, Gottfried Preller, a proposé une reconstruction complète de l'instrument de Bach, dont certaines parties existent encore (320 des 1 252 tuyaux d'origine) et qui, aujourd'hui, domine à nouveau l'église de sa splendeur baroque. Dans ce contexte, l'orgue romantique Steinmeyer situé sur la première galerie surélevée, dont le jeu est dissimulé par un auvent, a également été restauré.
A city fire in 1581 destroyed the church of St. Boniface that originally stood here. The baroque, single-nave “New Church” was built upon the old foundation in 1683. It was named after Johann Sebastian Bach on the composer’s 250th birthday. Johann Friedrich Wender from Mühlhausen built the organ for the place of worship between the years 1699 and 1703. The 18-year-old Johann Sebastian Bach was responsible for the final inspection and was the organist here until 1707. Despite many repairs and alterations, this original organ eventually became unplayable. In 1913, the Steinmeyer company installed a Romantic organ in the Bach Church. In 1990, the church music director, Gottfried Preller, recommended a comprehensive reconstruction of what was left of the Bach organ (320 of 1252 original pipes). It now fills the entire church with its baroque splendour. In this context, the Romantic Steinmeyer organ on the first gallery was restored and its organ works were covered by a baldachin.

Dabei überzeugte Bach mit seinem Spiel so sehr, dass er in Arnstadt seine erste Anstellung als Organist erhielt. Heute beherbergt die Bachkirche zwei Instrumente. Unterhalb der barocken Wender-Orgel befindet sich eine romantische Steinmeyer-Orgel aus dem Jahr 1913.
